چکیده

Suppose a domain expert gives us a domain theory which is meant to classify examples as positive or negative examples of some concept. Now suppose, as is often the case, that the expert speciies parts of the theory which might be in need of repair, as opposed to those parts of the theory which are certainly not in need of repair. We say that such a theory is partially mutable. There might be some non-empty set of examples each of which has a classiication in the partially mutable theory which is invariant under all possible sets of repairs to unreliable components of the theory. We call such examples stable. We present an eecient algorithm for identifying stable examples for a large class of rst-order clausal theories with negation and recursion. We further show how to use stability to arbitrate between the theory and a noisy oracle to improve classiication accuracy. We present experimental results on some awed theories which illustrate the approach.

Distilling nonlocality.

Two parts of an entangled quantum state can have a correlation, in their joint behavior under measurements, that is unexplainable by shared classical information. Such correlations are called nonlocal and have proven to be an interesting resource for information processing. Since nonlocal correlations are more useful if they are stronger, it is natural to ask whether weak nonlocality can be amp...

Response preparation modulates interference from irrelevant spatial information.

This study explored the effects of response cues on interference from irrelevant spatial stimulus information (i.e. on the Simon effect). Previous studies, which have always used unreliable response cues, consistently found that valid response cues increase the Simon effect, when compared to a neutral-cue condition. Two experiments tested possible explanations for the effects of response cues o...

Relational Recognition for Information Extraction in Free Text Documents

Information extraction tools provide an important means for distilling content from free text documents, and knowledgebased tools provide an important means for automatically reasoning over statements expressed as well-formed tuples. A number of techniques deliver reliable extraction of entities, less reliable extraction of relations, and poor extraction on entity-entity-relation tuples. Howeve...

Topology of biological networks and reliability of information processing

Survival of living cells and organisms is largely based on highly reliable function of their regulatory networks. However, the elements of biological networks, e.g., regulatory genes in genetic networks or neurons in the nervous system, are far from being reliable dynamical elements. How can networks of unreliable elements perform reliably? We here address this question in networks of autonomou...

Reliable Peer-to-Peer Information Monitoring through Replication

A key challenge in peer-to-peer computing systems is to provide a decentralized and yet reliable service on top of a network of loosely coupled, weakly connected and possibly unreliable peers. This paper presents an effective dynamic passive replication scheme designed to provide reliable service in PeerCQ, a decentralized and self-configurable peer-to-peer Internet information monitoring syste...
